You, in three words?

Disciplined, Adventurous, Ambitious.

What inspires you?

The world at large and my curiosity about it, people who I work with, the end result of strategy and business success.

What is your work title?

I personally don’t like to refer to a title; I don’t believe this defines someone or their success. I just refer to myself as Charlie.

What was your first ever job?

Potato picking when I was 10 years old.

What did you want to be ‘when you were little’?

I never considered what I wanted to be; there was no vision or plan of being anything.

How did the ‘Shop Charlie’s’ come about?

With my residential developments hitting the sale market, I am fully furnished and interior designed, specifically custom designed, built, and furnished to suit each site. I was manufacturing my own ZA Collective products offshore along with working with wholesalers. It just seemed like a natural progression to open my own store, allowing clients the opportunity to purchase the beautiful homewares which our developments were furnished with.

Explain your usual day.

I start at 2 am with a coffee, followed by 2 hours in the pool house working on writing/editing my books. I then do an hour of workout in my gym, followed by a quick swim in summer. The usual crazy school lunches and getting my teens out of bed and into the car for the school run. I start my usual business day at the head office around 9 am, meetings, site visits for PCB and Charlies Interiors, and marketing and PR calls in the afternoons. I finish my day with another quick workout, usually a jog to clear the conversations from the day, make dinner, and continue with reports and financials before I finally hit my bed around 10 pm. Weekends are a little more flexible with dinners and drinks out; however, these are sprinkled with Zoom meetings with India and Mongolia, along with writing responsibilities. In a nutshell, I think I’m always working, which is amazing because I love every piece of it.

What ‘makes your day’?

I am very goal-driven and certainly get my kicks out of achieving success, so I think when a day goes according to plan, it certainly makes me smile. Outside of this, I love my friends, family, and senior management team, so having the opportunity to see the people I love most daily always makes me feel loved and supported. So, both of those, absolutely.

Five things in your life you can’t live without?

My children, family, and friends, my shoes, travel.

What are your four favourite songs on your playlist?

YouNotUs Club Mix, Sickick – Mix, Modern Classic Upbeat Mix.

What is your favourite place to escape to?

Mongolia.

How do you relax?

Rock climbing, flying a plane, and jogging.

Best piece of life advice you’ve received?

Do your thing quietly, with dignity and grace, there is no need to notify anyone else of what you are doing.

What will you be doing 5 years’ time?

Exactly what I’m doing now, but more of it and at a higher level.
