Does having a coffee after taking your vitamins interfere with their absorption?
Unfortunately my suspicions were correct… yes caffeine can interfere with the absorption of important vitamins and minerals. Blackmores Naturopath, Rebekah Russell says, “Caffeine decreases the absorption of calcium and iron and may also interfere with the absorption of vitamin A. It also increases urinary excretion of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc leading to mineral imbalances.”
So, lesson is, if you’re taking vitamins around the same time as indulging in caffeine, you won’t receive the full benefit of the supplement. Take your vitamins and wait a couple of hours before having your latte, or vice versa!
