petaluma renovation: HOW WE CREATED MORE SPACE #2

Nikki Yazxhi

… and how we created more space and flow through the house.

As you know we renovated at the end of 2016… we wanted to create more space and extra storage. We completely gutted the house and re-plastered using Gyprock Sensitive Plasterboard. {You can check out the before shots here.}

The reason we chose Gyprock Sensitive is because it’s a revolutionary hypoallergenic plasterboard that is the first and only residential plasterboard to be approved by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program as a better choice for asthma and allergy sufferers. Treated with a powerful but gentle anti-fungal agent, Sensitive is designed to resist mould growth, enhancing the quality of living for families who suffer from asthma and allergies.

Apart from replacing the old original plasterboard, using Gyprock played a key part in creating bigger spaces and the all-important extra storage. We used Gyprock plasterboard to make a recess for the television that cleverly hides all of the cables, and to create the bookshelves on either side {one of my fave parts of the renovation}.

Another trick we used to create more space… we opened up doorways taking them all the way up to the ceiling and used Gyprock Plasterboard to replace the existing ornate cornices with a shadowline effect. The change was instant, and created a completely clean, modern finish.

the technical details: Gyprock Sensitive is part of Gyprock’s Residential Specialty Options range of plasterboards. This gypsum plasterboard’s core is treated with a powerful but gentle antifungal agent, which penetrates through the paper liner and paint coating. The core contains a wax emulsion to make it highly resistant to moisture and humidity without compromising integrity and the product is classified as low in volatile organic compounds (VOC), meaning it emits fewer chemicals than the acceptable Australian standard. These attributes make it an ideal choice to use throughout the homes of asthma and allergy sufferers.

And because Gyprock Sensitive is not subject to moisture movement and has extremely low water absorption characteristics, it provides an excellent, stable substrate for ceramic tiles {which is perfect as we completely re-tiled both bathrooms}.
