new year, new you: 5 SKIN THINGS YOU NEED TO DO

Nikki Yazxhi

skin things for 2015

and now it’s time to deal with the fallout. Namely, our lacklustre, blotchy, dull skin.

If you’re not as bright-eyed and fresh-faced as you were just a few months ago, here’s what you need to do to get your skin back on track…

1. HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE Over the holidays, you probably haven’t been drinking the recommended eight glasses a day needed to keep your skin glowing, your digestion in check, your energy up, and your metabolism kicking. Right? Yes, if you’re like us, you’re out of the habit, plus drinking that much water is also easier said than done – which is why we like mixing it up by drinking Ovi Hydration.

WHY OVI IS THE PERFECT HYDRATION… OVI Hydration has been created with a balance of water, natural minerals, sugar, fruit juice and natural flavours with antioxidants from green tea. It comes in the three flavours; Citrus, Peach and Berry which contain absolutely ‘no badditives’, (being free from any artificial colours, sweeteners, preservatives and flavours) – and they’re delicious. You pretty much finish a bottle before you know it! {Peach is our fave. CLICK HERE to see what our reader-reviewers favourite flavours.}

And if you still have trouble remembering when to hydrate, check out Waterlogged, it’s a clever app that sends you reminders!

 Exfoliation wakes [skin] up and enables it to do its job, which is protecting everything inside it. During the holidays it’s typical to wear more makeup because there are so many fun parties to attend. And, perhaps after those parties, we aren’t quite as diligent about removing our makeup at night.

Keeping your face covered in foundation can “suffocate” it and can also lead to clogged pores and a “dragged down” appearance. You can also prevent the skin’s necessary cell turnover by smothering it with thick foundations, this is why it’s oh-so-important to remove your makeup at night. Then, get yourself into an exfoliation schedule by using a gentle scrub at least three times a week to get your skin back in tip-top, glowing condition. If you don’t have time to exfoliate treat yourself to an enzyme peel or a lactic acid mask. This way you ensure you are stripping away excess makeup and dead skin cell buildup.

For lacklustre limbs, it’s like a gym workout for your skin minus the monthly fee! [The process] stimulates the lymphatic system, which aids in ridding toxins and also helps rid the body of dead skin cell buildup. Before your bath or shower, start at your toes, and brush upward toward your heart, then go from your shoulders to your heart.

 Sorry guys, bad news: hot showers strip your skin of it’s natural oils, leaving it very dry and irritated, and your hair’s protective oils which can throw your scalp into overdrive, leading to root damage and excessive shedding.  So the tricks to take onboard for the new year: keep the temperature lukewarm, limit the amount of time you shower (keep it under five minutes), use a moisturising body wash instead of soap, and always moisturise your skin within three minutes of getting out of the bath or shower, to lock the water into the skin.

 There is no such thing as a safe tan, the sun is ‘enemy number one to the skin’. It causes premature ageing by attacking and weakening our skin’s connective tissue; hyper pigmentation making the skin blotchy and uneven in colour due to the sun effects on our skin’s melanin’ it causes capillary damage (broken thread veins, skin sensitivity and redness); skin thickening; and worst of all cell trauma resulting in permanent damage which could lead to contracting skin cancer.

The best defense against the sun – and anti ageing – is a broad spectrum sunscreen which blocks both UVA and UVB rays – and it needs to be applied at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun and reapplied throughout the day to maintain it’s SPF sun block screening.

For sun products, as well as general skin care, buy products that are multi-functional. Since the sun causes dehydration you need to protect the skin along with helping strengthen the capillaries (preventing leaking). The sun causes a great deal of free radical damage so it’s also imperative to have products that contain high levels of anti- oxidants.
6. SLEEP MORE You’ll be pleased to know, the number one piece of advice for great-looking skin is sleep! Catching up on your zzzs can dramatically improve skin (so no more late nights— the party season is over).
