new kids on the block: THE DUO SHAKING UP THE PR INDUSTRY

Nikki Yazxhi

They say good things come in twos and this proves correct for one of Brisbane’s newest public relations agencies, Duo Public Relations, who in their first six months of operation have signed 21 clients, fronted a digital marketing event and expanded with their very first team member. We found out what makes the founders tick…

Founded in November 2017, Connie Tynan and Kaitie Mulherin had their sights set on differentiating themselves within the industry and with their fresh, creative and non cookie-cutter approach, these new kids on the block were able to quickly break through and cement themselves as major contenders within the industry.

The duo were determined to shake things up, and being separated by hemispheres wasn’t going to stop them. With Connie exploring everything the UK has to offer and Kaitie firmly on the ground in Brisbane, a niche was found in providing a 24-hour, boutique style service for clients.

‘We love that we’re able to offer our clients a boutique style agency with global touchpoints. Our clients know that they can contact us at any time of day or night and get a response from one of us’ says Connie.

With over six years combined industry experience, the team were able to pool their individual strengths to provide a unique and results driven service for new and existing businesses. In the six months since Duo’s establishment, this pair has been nothing if not busy with their millennial mindset and creative visions attracting some of Brisbane’s local heavyweights. Companies such as The Myer Centre, The Cove co-working space and Nodo have all claimed a spot on their busy client list.

‘We really wanted to carve a niche in the market. There wasn’t anyone placing a focus on the growing startup landscape in Queensland and we wanted to help foster the entrepreneurial spirit of our city’ Brisbane based co-founder Kaitie said. ‘This is why we created a start-up solutions model to offer affordable and bespoke packages to help brands we love make waves’.

The rapid and successful growth of Duo PR has been an exciting feat for the powerhouse pair and with plans for expansion as they take on their first employee, Connie and Kaitie are showing no signs of slowing down.

bellamumma chatted to the girls to get a little more insider info…

Is this your first business? Yes, this is our first business! It was a huge shake-up ditching the 9 to 5 and all the security that comes with it, but we would never look back! It has been such an exhilarating journey.

How long have you had the business? We started the business in November 2017, we only softly launched for the first couple of months to iron out all of the operational side of the business, then really hit GO in Jan/Feb 2018.

How has the business changed since you first started? The business has pretty much been flipped on it’s head since we started! We have evolved the business to not only adapt to our external business relationship, but also the way we conduct business with new and existing clients. As this is our first business, there were things behind the scenes that we had never considered, so streamlining all of these operational elements has been a constant learning curve.

How have you adapted? This has been a question we get asked a lot! To be honest, we both adapted to this new business and lifestyle quite naturally. I think the key is passion and motivation for what you do, and this obviously fires up the determination to succeed. Obviously there are times where we naturally feel a little overwhelmed, but the minute we set time aside to talk it through we instantly feel supported and relieved.

What’s your morning routine like? Because we’re on different sides of the world, communication is key! So both our mornings start with emails in bed, checking the Whatsapp chat and hopping onto Instagram to see what’s happened overnight. We then usually jump on Facetime and have a quick client catch up before starting our day! We do try and break up all the technology, so Kaitie tries to fit in a morning workout before heading to the office and Connie braves the UK weather for a walk.

One piece of advice every new business woman needs to know? Surround yourself with people who know more than you do! This way you always have the opportunity to learn.

Any training you would recommend? We’re always on the lookout ways to better the Duo offering and we try and do as much training as possible (which is easier said than done when you’re busy!). Our favourite way to learn is through podcasts, listening to other successful women who have forged the way.

If you could advise your younger self something about what you know business wise, what would you say? Hire a good accountant! You know absolutely nothing about tax and you’ll need all the help you can get! Ha

Would you do it all again? 100%. We’ve learnt so much in a short amount of time and have had a ball doing it – even if we are on opposite sides of the world!
