We associate dark undereye circles with being a sleep-deprived parent,
but that’s not always the case.

While lack of sleep can exacerbate undereye darkness, it’s not always the sole cause. Heredity, ageing, allergies and diet are also big contributors. Here are four insider strategies how to get rid of dark undereye circles + four of our fave products to help you overcome the ‘darkness’…

1. rethink your diet

“In Chinese methodology the under-eye area is linked to our kidneys and liver and it’s believed if these organs are overloaded or stressed dark circles under the eyes can appear,” says Emma Hobson, Education Manager at The International Dermal Institute and bM contributor. “It’s therefore advisable to reduce stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol and smoking – and get a good night’s sleep to help eliminate the need for these.”

Dark circles can also be associated with allergies. Cut back on dairy, caffeine and refined/processed foods to see if it makes a difference. Also increase your water intake and ensure good liver function by taking Milk Thistle tablets.

2. upgrade your skincare

“Use an eye cream that contains optical light diffusers,” advises Hobson. “These act like microscopic mirrors on the skin surface by reflecting the light so they dramatically reduce the appearance of dark circles.”

3. master make-up moves

“Apply concealer one shade lighter than your foundation by gently patting it on with your fingertip,” says celebrity make-up artist, Rae Morris. “This warms the product and makes it easier to blend. It’s also gentler on the delicate eye area,” she says. “Start around the inner eye and work outwards – blending it well as you go.”

4. enlist extra help

Injectable fillers plump up hollowness under the eye caused by ageing and make it look less shadowy. Fillers like Restylane, known for it’s plumping properties, provide a clear layer between the skin and muscle to lighten the darkness.
