What is the name of your business? ‘Dalton & Hughes’ is the name of our bespoke gifting company. We decided to combine both of our family names because we wanted to have a brand that felt personal and true to us.
What are your titles? We are both Co-founders and Directors of the Company (sounds fancy, we know). We both work across all aspects of the business!
Is this your first business? It sure is! We are learning everything as we go which has been a little daunting at times but very rewarding.
How long have you had the business? Dalton & Hughes is a concept that was born out of the Covid-19 Lockdown, we both experienced significant changes to the industries we work in and saw an opportunity to create something of our own. At a time when the job market for young people is particularly uncertain, taking our fate into our own hands has been empowering. We officially launched our Online Gifting Store at the end of September and it has been a whirlwind few weeks.
One piece of advice every new businesswoman needs to know? Don’t be afraid to reach out to people and ask for advice or guidance! We have been so blown away with how generous people have been with their time and expertise. The network of young, successful and helpful women we have discovered has been a real highlight.
Any training you would recommend? We have found that you learn the most by just jumping in and doing. We have done everything ourselves, from Branding to Web Development to Financing. We have also learnt a lot from each other. We did different degrees and worked in very different areas so bringing a diverse skill set to the table has been wonderful.
If you could advise your younger self something about what you know business-wise, what would you say? It is so important to believe in the product or service you are selling. We have such an appreciation for quality Champagne and love for Vintage Crystal Glassware. There is something so special about gifting Vintage Glassware that has been enjoyed for decades by others. Knowing that we are able to help facilitate a moment of celebration has been so joyous.
Would you do it all again? Absolutely…well maybe ask us this in a few more months! We both feel so lucky to have been able to create this company in the best company. The circular economy is a space luxury has historically avoided but since we have begun we have seen brands like Gucci and Levi making resale desirable. We believe this is just the beginning for circular luxury.
