If you’re anything like us, then you most likely have a bathroom cupboard full of skincare products… but only use (and know how to use) about half of them. A lot of that is down to knowing when and why you would use a product – the general rule of thumb is to start with your lightest product and end with your thickest.

If you’ve ever stood in the bathroom and asked yourself “when should serum be applied?” or “do you use facial oil before or after moisturiser?”, read our step-by-step skincare routine for morning and night below, with a little help from Australian skincare brand Jurlique.

1. Cleanse

When? Morning and night.
The first step in any skincare routine is to cleanse. This is important to do twice a day and, in the evenings, do a double cleanse for a deep clean (this will ensure you remove all your makeup and dirt from the day, as well as unclog your pores). Ditch the makeup wipes and choose a nourishing cleansing oil that won’t strip the skin.

2. Mist

When? Morning and night
After cleansing, add moisture back into your skin with a hydrating mist. Jurlique’s facial mists are designed to be used in place of a traditional toner and have the added benefit of uplifting, natural scents. Spritz the iconic Rosewater Balancing Mist onto your face and gently press onto the skin.

3. Essence

When? Morning and night
What may just look like a bottle of water is a must-do step in your skincare routine. Enter the facial essence: a hard-working product that hydrates and preps the skin, helping it absorb the products that come after it. Want to make sure you soak up all the skin-loving ingredients of your serum? Apply an essence first. To apply, pour a couple of drops into your hands and gently press over the face.

4. Serum

When? Morning and night
To take your skincare up a notch, apply a serum every morning and evening. Serums are highly concentrated potent formulas that target specific skin concerns so it’s best to have a few in your bathroom cupboard, depending on what your skin needs (whether it’s a bit more brightness, or a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, or redness). For long-lasting hydration, apply Jurlique’s Moisture Plus Rare Rose Serum or if ageing skin is your biggest concern, choose Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum.

5. Eye cream

When? Morning and night
Eye creams are lighter than moisturisers, so it’s best to apply them first. Thinner products can’t penetrate thicker products so if you apply your eye cream after your moisturiser, you won’t reap any of the benefits. Eye creams are designed for different skin concerns – for help with signs of ageing, puffiness and dark circles, apply a small amount of Jurlique’s Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Cream to the eye area morning and evening.

6. Moisturiser

When? Morning and night
Moisturisers seal in hydration, improve the skin’s protective barrier and lock in the benefits of the products you’ve used before it. Choose one designed for your skin concern and opt for a light formula such as a lotion in the morning, with a richer, nourishing one in the evening.

7. Face oil

When? Morning or night
Face oils can be used in the morning or the evening and are best applied after your moisturiser, as moisturisers can’t penetrate oils. They add extra nourishment and hydration to the skin, leaving it looking and feeling soft and smooth – plus, they work for every skin type (even oily). Jurlique’s Skin Balancing Face Oil is suitable for all skin types and addresses signs of uneven skin tone.

+ Sunscreen

When? Morning
We all love a bit of sun, but it can have damaging effects on the skin. After moisturising in the morning, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day – even when it’s cloudy – to protect it from harmful UV rays.
