YeS, according to a a study at the University of Michigan, interacting with nature by either going outdoors or simply looking at picture of the great outdoors, can enhance mental productivity and boost your mood.
Participants in the study memorised number sequences and recited them backward before and after walking for nearly an hour in either a large wooded park or on city streets.
A week later, they repeated the experiment but did the other type of walk. Amazingly, the subjects’ ability to perform the number task improved—by about 20 percent—only after their time in the woods.
Computerised attention tests interspersed with 10 minutes of viewing urban, seaside or countryside photos showed similar results. Because nature scenes do not require focused attention, they allow the brain to “recharge the batteries, so to speak,” say the researchers.
