petaluma renovation: HOW WE CREATED MORE SPACE #1

You’ve seen our home, Petaluma House, in Elle and Inside Out magazines… well now I’m sharing our renovation tips and tricks, that we picked up in the process, plus what we used to make our home feel more spacious…

After nearly 15 years of living in our family home, we came to a point where had to decide whether we wanted to move to somewhere bigger or renovate the home we loved, in an area we loved. We chose {obviously} to renovate.

One of our biggest issues was space and storage. We needed to the house to work better now the boys were bigger. We wanted to create a flowing open-plan living, and one way to we achieved this was to replace old windows and doors with new streamlined ones.

In the dining room, we went from an old timber framed sliding double door to a Stegbar aluminium bi-fold patio door which has completely opened up the room and has given it the illusion of more space. Now the dining room flows out onto the balcony, and into the garden. Amazing for entertaining.

While closed, the aluminium bi-fold door let in amazing light, and because they’re double-glazed they retain the heat in winter and the coolness of the airconditioning in summer. They’ve really allowed us to really maximise the space all year round.

To open up the kitchen area, we removed the old timber framed window and replaced it with Stegbar’s Aneeta sashless window. It instantly opened up the whole area and made the kitchen look and feel bigger, plus it looks amazing open and closed!

We also replaced the small timber framed windows in the bathroom and ensuite with floor to ceiling Breezway Louvres from Stegbar. I love the ventilation of natural and light into the bathrooms now, {the orchids even grown in there now}, plus it gives the the illusion of more space.

I also love Stegbar’s Breezway Louvres because you to control the strength of the breeze through when they’re opened, {the louvres act as air conditioning} – and when they’re closed, they seal tightly to insulate the bathroom. You can also lock them with a key when you go away.

We love the final result – it’s our dream home and we couldn’t be happier.
