THE IMPOSSIBLY SMOOTH, SHINY, BOUNCY HAIR YOU SEE ON SHAMPOO COMMERCIALS AND IN MAGAZINE ISN’T COMPLETELY OUT OF REACH AFTER ALL

Two on-set stylists reveal the method behind the magic…

• Start off strong. Stylist Kerry Warn, who has worked on John Frieda ads, plumps up models’ fine hair with volumising shampoo. To condition, Gary Glossman, a creative director at Matrix, tells models to hold their hair in the shower as if it’s in a ponytail and apply conditioner only to the tail {since it can make roots limp}.

• Feel free to vent. A big, round vent brush with boar bristles is best for adding volume to a blow-out—the natural bristles reduce static, and the opening allows air to flow onto the hair, making it easier to lift. While blow-drying, stylists pull three-inch sections of hair up and away from the head with the brush. Once hair is dry, they spritz a thickening spray onto the roots from a few inches away.

• End up. Body starts at the roots, but the action is at the ends. “Usually we flip the ends slightly out, because that makes them move better,” Warn says. Wrap the ends around a round brush, twist the brush toward your face, and aim the nozzle at it from underneath.
