our leading dietitian and contributor Susie Burrell has created the easiest back-to-work ‘wrap recipes’ that work for lunch or a quick dinner

Leading health experts are warning us to check food labels, after a University of Newcastle review of the leading wraps brands found some are actually packed with salt and contain artificial preservatives. The team of researchers analysised 22 of Australia’s top selling wraps brands in a recent Wraps Unwrapped Report and found that some wraps that appeared healthy have the potential to make a significant contribution to daily salt intakes when consumed regularly, which is worrying given we already consume too much salt. {More finding from the report HERE}


Leading dietitian and our health contributor, Susie Burrell, also reviewed all the research, and said that while some wraps are high in salt, not all wraps are bad.

“The good news is that some of the wraps included in the Wraps Unwrapped Report were found to be lower in salt and contain no artificial preservatives.”

“One good choice for those wanting to moderate their salt intake and avoid artificial preservatives is Helga’s Traditional White Wraps (430mg sodium per 100g),” says Susie.

“Learn to read food labels and look for wraps with the lowest levels of salt. Wraps that contain around 600mg of sodium per 100g or less are considered to be moderate in salt according to the UK Food Standards Agency. Steer clear of anything over 600mg of sodium per 100g as that’s considered to be high in salt,” she says.

Susie’s Steak ‘n Onions Wrap

Preparation time: 5 minuteshelgassteakonionwrap-02
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Serves: 2

3 teaspoons olive oil
1 red onion, cut into wedges
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
ground black pepper
250g Porterhouse steak (3 cm thick)
2 Helga’s Traditional White Wraps
2 tablespoons reduced fat aioli
2 cups shredded Iceberg lettuce leaves
1 tomato, coarsely chopped
2 teaspoons salt reduced barbecue sauce

1. Heat 2 teaspoons of the oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, stirring occasionally. Add sugar, red wine and pepper and cook, stirring for 1 minute. Remove from frying pan and cover with foil to keep warm.

2. Wipe pan clean with kitchen paper. Heat pan over a medium – high heat. Brush steak with remaining oil and sprinkle with pepper. Cook steak for 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, for medium rare, or to your liking. Remove steak from pan and set aside, loosely covered with foil, for 5 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, microwave wraps for 15 seconds on high until just warm. Spread each wrap with aioli. Top with lettuce, tomato, sliced steak, onions and barbecue sauce. Wrap to enclose filling, leaving one end open.
