DO YOU SPEND MORE TIME RENOVATING YOUR SPACE THAN YOU DO ON YOUR BODY MAINTENANCE?

Time for a bit of ‘reno’ rescue, beauty style. Here’s 5 prescribed treatments for a neglected body and how to beauty DIY at home…


1. neglected hands and feet

diy rescue: First remove any polish, file nails and apply cuticle remover. Next, exfoliate away dead skin with a mixture of lemon juice and rock salt, then rinse with warm water. When drying the hands and feet, use the towel to push back cuticles.

Soak feet in a bowl of warm water to which you’ve added a few drops of peppermint oil – this has a cooling, stimulating effect – while you massage your hands and cuticles with warm olive oil. Put your hands in plastic bags for five minutes to help the oil penetrate.

Remove feet from water and rub away any extra-dry skin with a pumice, before rinsing off and drying. Massage in a rich hand cream – to which you can add a few drops of peppermint oil to get your circulation going – before putting on cotton socks. Keep them on for at least 20 minutes for super-soft feet.

If you want to apply a polish, wipe over nails with polish remover to remove any oil, otherwise the polish won’t adhere.

2. no-glow complexion

diy rescue: Cleanse your face thoroughly before toning with Witchhazel or rosewater (available at chemists) to rebalance the skin, Next, gently massage your face with an exfoliant using figure eight motions for three minutes – then remove with warm washers – which you’ve soaked in hot water and lavender oil – to refreshen the skin.

Rinse the washer, lie down and place it over your face for several minutes to awaken skin and cleanse away impurities before applying a nourishing mask made up of one small ripe banana, one avocado, half tablespoon of plain yogurt and two drops of vitamin E oil. Leave on for 15 minutes before washing off and applying a protective moisturiser.

3. snowdome skin

diy rescue: Make your own body scrub by combining one cup of sugar with half a cup of olive oil until the consistency is pasty and sdd a teaspoon of cinnamon to give it some zing.

Standing in the shower or bath, start massaging the scrub onto dry skin – working up from your toes. Use circular movements and always massage towards the heart to improve lymphatic flow and help detoxify the body. Spend more time on scaly areas like heels, knees and elbows – and use gentle motions across the bust area, avoiding the nipple.

Shower off and apply a hydrating body cream before relaxing with your feet up for at least 15 minutes. Drink plenty of purified water after your scrub treatment to assist in further elimination of toxins.

4. tired body

diy rescue: Using a loofah in the shower, brush skin with upward strokes to exfoliate away dead skin, rinse off and pat dry.

Warm some body mud in a bowl resting in hot water. You could also use yogurt or avocado. First apply a small amount on the inside of your elbow and knee to check for any allergic reactions- leave on for one hour before applying to the entire body.

Smooth mud over entire body, lie on a towel, then cover up with another towel you’ve warmed in the dryer. Relax for 10 minutes, then shower it off before applying body lotion.

5. shine-free hair

diy rescue: You can use an intensive conditioning treatment your stylist has matched to your hair type, or you can use eggs as a hair treatment. Eggs contain lecithin which helps to moisturise dry hair.

Beat an egg and apply it to dry hair. Cover with a plastic bag for 15 minutes before shampooing and rinsing off with totally with cold water – this closes the hair shaft and makes the hair extra shiny.

A hair treatment should be built into your routine at least once a week to improve the shine and texture of your hair.
