MEET SILVIA COLLOCA – ACTRESS, OPERA SINGER,
COOK, AUTHOR, BLOGGER
our cooking & food contributor
Silvia is in every sense of the word, a ‘wonderwoman’. She’s an actress and opera singer. She does films, recitals, opera, musical theatre, concerts and plays. She’s an incredible cook, has her own blog (dedicated to authentic Italian home cooking), has her own cookbooks and her own cooking/travel series. She’s a mum to two gorgeous little boys and is married to one of Australia’s most respected actors, Richard Roxburgh. She’s drop-dead-gorgeous in real life, down-to-earth and so-inspiring!
We are so ‘pinch-ourselves-happy’ to have her onboard to share snippets of her life and delicious recipes…
To find out a little more about Silvia, we asked her the bellaMUMMA questions…
You, in three words? Passionate, upfront, clumsy
What inspires you? Honesty. People who have the courage to be true to themselves are a great source of inspiration
What’s your work title? It’s a little long… Food writer/tv host/producer/actress/opera singer.
What was your first ever job? I used to mix cocktails and make Panini in a seedy bar in Milan!
What did you want to be ‘when you were little’? I always wanted to be a performer. I was born with ‘the bug’.
How did you cooking career come about? Food was always been passion. I learnt to cook at my Nonna’s knee, and as soon as I was old enough I was behind the stove herself.
It was only by accident that food became my job. I was at home with my two small sons and all my creative projects has dried up. My mother suggested I write a blog. ” ‘Everyone’s doing blogs’,” she said. The plan was to collate all the family recipes in the same place. The writing was slapdash and the photos snapped on an old phone. But my blog ‘Silvia’s Cucina’ developed a loyal following and suddenly I was buying a new camera, polishing up on my grammar.
In 2013, Penguin published my first cookbook, Silvia’s Cucina. In 2014, my second book followed – Made in Italy. Then came my 10-part TV series of the same name which debuted on SBS last November.
Explain your usual day? There is no usual day when you have a few different careers and two boys to bring up! Life is chaotic at best! At times a bit stressful, but never boring.
What ‘makes your day’? When my boys get along and giggle together.
How would you describe your style? Casual with a touch or rock and roll.
Three products you can’t live without? Extra-virgin olive oil; rose hip oil; and toothpaste.
4 fave songs on your iPod? Sweet Child Of Mine by Guns ‘N Roses; Il Cielo In Una Stanza by Gino Paoli; Just Breathe by Pearl Jam; and Che Farò Senza Euridice by Gluck’s Orfeo.
What will you be doing 5 years time? I don’t think I have another secret career and talent to showcase! I’m going to stick to what I’m doing now, and do the best job I can.
Stay tuned for Silvia’s posts, we can’t wait… and in the meantime:
