WE CHATTED TO DAVID JONES’ STYLIST, KELVIN HARRIES TO FIND OUT WHAT’S SUPER-STYLISH THIS SEASON

here’s his fashion insider tips

kelvinKevlin Harries, {picture left,on set of David Jones Mother’s Day catalogue with Jesinta Campbell and her mum, Valerie} is one of Australia’s fashion gurus and has been styling for David Jones for fourteen year, both on seasonal campaigns and runway shows. “My very first campaign was shooting Megan Gale in Catania, Sicily. Megan was at the height of her fame in Italy at that time following a series of very racy TV commercials for Omnitel and Vodafone. We had to have police, security, barricades just to shoot her on the street of a sleepy little town!”

We just love him {I worked with him in my magazine days} – and his style, so wanted his style advice on what we should be wearing this Autumn/Winter…

Kelvin’s four top trends for A/W 15

1. Luxury sportswear still underpins many collections again this season.

2. Silhouettes are easy and wearable in quality, tactile fabrics {silk, jersey, cashmere, wool and leather} This suits the Australian aesthetic for comfortable, non-fuss dressing. This has been most successfully interpreted by designers Bassike, Jac and Jack, Sabatini, Strateas Carlucci and this also filters down to main stream national brands Country Road and Witchery.

3. Tones are monochromatic and neutral with a strong return to all shades of grey.

4. Black and navy partner together as separates and the key highlight colour from many brands is a jolt of vivid blue.

Kelvin’s three staples you should always have in wardrobe:

1. A classic coat (or light weight trench if you live in a warmer region) – this is one area where you want to invest well – a great coat will last you for years and if you choose a classic line in a neutral colour it will never date.

2. A great pair of pants that really suits your body shape (whether they are smart tailored pants or your favourite jeans) Once you find the pair that really suits you will find yourself going back to that brand time and time again.

3.  A classic black dress is the foundation cornerstone of every woman’s wardrobe. Black is flattering on all body shapes. It can look simple and understated for day but can be ramped up with jewellery and shoes for after 5 – look what it did for Audrey Hepburn! Matt fabrics (like a good quality silk crepe) can move more easily from day to night and are more flattering than shiny fabrics.
