Lisa Messenger is the publisher and Editor in Chief of renegade COLLECTIVE magazine and Owner and Creative Director of The Messenger Group. She has worked globally in events, sponsorship, marketing, PR and publishing.

She’s also authored and co-authored 17 books and The Messenger Group has custom published more than 400 books for companies and individuals. She has been a regular commentator on business, entrepreneurialism and property. She has sat on the board of the Australian Businesswomen’s Network and currently sits on the board of Publishers Australia.

She’s been a three time finalist in the Telstra Businesswoman of the Year and won Alumni of the Year for Southern Cross University. She’s trekked across India raising money for charity, ridden camels in the Sahara and experienced frightenly communal showers in the Costa Rican Jungle.

Her passion is to challenge and change the way people think, take them out of their comfort zone and prove that there is more than one way to do anything. She encourages entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and innovation and lives life to the absolute max.

Melinda chatted with Lisa to find out a little more about her world and what makes her tick:

You, in three words? Loving. Fun. Driven.

What inspires you? Seeing the difference we can all make in the world by being a beacon of light to others.

What’s your work title? Founder and Editor in Chief, the Collective. Also CEO, The Messenger Group

What was your first ever job? Horse Riding Instructor

What did you want to be ‘when you were little’? Horse Riding Instructor

How did ‘The Collective’ come about? I got so sick of all the gossip and negativity being portrayed in global media. I wanted something inspirational, aspirational that could be a catalyst for positive change and an “anything’s possible” attitude in the world.

Explain your usual day? There is absolutely NO such thing as “usual” in my day. I do everything from coming up with story ideas for the mag, negotiating more country deals, brokering marketing and distribution partnerships, coming up with product collaborations, doing speaking gigs, travelling the world looking for ideas, meeting amazing people and opening new markets for us, motivating my team, training (as in for my own health and fitness), looking at art work, coming up with new creative concepts, looking at product extensions, writing books, doing interviews etc etc etc. It’s non stop.

What ‘makes your day’? Hearing from our incredible readers as to how they have used the Collective as a catalyst to pursue their dreams. AND spend time with the love of my life (he inspires me and supports me like nothing else) and our dog Benny.

Who’s your fashion icon? I love a lot of the new designers coming out of Australia now.

How would you describe your style? Pretty bland at the moment – almost black black and black. I’m so busy just doing the do right now I almost just throw on whatevers closest most of the time. Actually my latest back page (in the Maria Issue – Issue 13 talks a lot about why this is…)

Three products you can’t live without? iPhone, iPad and my Samsonite luggage because I travel so much.

What will you be doing 5 years time? Who knows. I don’t like to limit myself. The big vision is definitely to be to entrepreneurs what Jamie Oliver is to cooking and what Martha Stewart is to lifestyle. There are no limits. I’m going BIG!!
